Following the announcement of Vanguard adding a minimum £4-per-month fee to all UK investors, a huge number of previously loyal Vanguard customers decided to leave the platform – and they've been looking for alternatives.

Many were looking to switch to InvestEngine, if comments on our YouTube channel were anything to go by.

And while InvestEngine doesn't typically support SIPP transfers in, they rushed to capitalise on the influx of demand by rolling this feature out with immediate effect. Right now though, you can only transfer a SIPP either from Vanguard or Hargreaves Lansdown.

You can do this through mobile or through desktop.

An important note: you cannot transfer if your pension is in drawdown (InvestEngine doesn't support drawdown at this time) or if your pension is subject to any existing or proposed divorce, earmarking or pension sharing order, trustee in bankruptcy order or any other type of court order.

To transfer your private pension portfolio to InvestEngine from Vanguard, follow these instructions:

  1. Sign up or login to InvestEngine
  2. On your home dashboard, under "personal pension", you should see the "transfer a pension" option
  3. Follow the instructions and fill out your transfer information
  4. Agree with the disclaimer and terms (after reading and understanding them, of course)
  5. Click submit.

Most of this is really straightforward. However, you'll just need to know a few things when setting up your transfer...

Transfer information

To transfer, you'll need to know the following things:

  • Your Vanguard personal plan reference. You can find this inside your Vanguard SIPP, it will say 'Pension' and then start with 'VG' followed by a series of numbers.
  • Are you doing a full or partial transfer? Or, more simply, do you want to transfer all of your pension or just some of it?
  • Are you doing a cash transfer or in-specie transfer? If you've sold your assets and you're moving cash across, choose cash. If you want to keep hold of your investments without selling, choosing in-specie.

Financial Interest provides guidance, not advice. If you’re unsure about anything, speak with a qualified adviser. When investing, your capital is always at risk. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
